Over 2.5 Goals Explained: How the Bet Works and When It Wins

Over 2.5 goals is one of the most popular football totals bets. Here is how it is settled, why the half goal matters and what the other lines mean.

Over 2.5 goals wins if the match has three goals or more. Under 2.5 wins if it has two goals or fewer. The goals of both teams are added together, and the result of the match does not matter: 2-1, 0-3 and 2-2 are all "over", while 1-0 and 0-0 are "under".

Why the line ends in .5

A half-goal line cannot be hit exactly, because a match cannot finish with 2.5 goals. That removes the push: the bet always either wins or loses. Lines on whole numbers behave differently:

  • Over 2.5: wins with 3 or more goals, loses with 0, 1 or 2.
  • Over 2 (whole line): wins with 3 or more, loses with 0 or 1, and with exactly 2 goals the stake is returned.
  • Over 3: wins with 4 or more, loses with 0 to 2, and with exactly 3 goals the stake is returned.

Quarter lines such as 2.75 and 2.25

Lines that end in .25 or .75 split your stake over the two nearest lines, in the same way as the quarter handicaps in our guide to Asian handicap lines.

  • Over 2.75 is half a stake on over 2.5 and half on over 3. With 3 goals you win the first half and get the second half back, so it is a half win. With 2 goals or fewer you lose everything, and with 4 or more you win both halves.
  • Under 2.75 is half on under 2.5 and half on under 3. With 2 goals or fewer you win both halves. With exactly 3 goals you lose the first half and get the second back, so it is a half loss.
  • Over 2.25 is half on over 2 and half on over 2.5. With exactly 2 goals you get the first half back and lose the second, a half loss. With 3 or more you win both.

Our results page counts every tip as one win, loss or push, as explained in how our tips are made and graded.

Reading the price

Totals on the main lines are priced close to even, so the margin between the two sides matters. At a decimal price of 1.90 on over 2.5, the implied chance is 1 / 1.90, or about 52.6%. The over has to land more often than that for the bet to be worth taking. If the under is also priced 1.90, the two sides together add up to more than 100%: that surplus is the bookmaker's margin. Hong Kong style prices, which we use for totals and handicaps, show the profit only: 0.90 is the same as 1.90 in decimal.

What to look at

  • Goals per match. Look at the recent average of both teams, home and away separately, rather than the league average.
  • Both attack and defence. A team that scores a lot and concedes a lot is the best fit for over. Two stingy teams that score little are the best fit for under.
  • Line-ups and absences. A missing key defender or striker moves the total more than people expect.
  • The reason for the match. A league decider can be tight and cautious, while a dead rubber at the end of the season can be open. Weather and pitch also change the total.
  • The quality gap. A strong favourite against a weak side can finish 4-0, but it can also win 1-0 and sit back. The gap alone does not tell you the total.

Over 2.5 versus BTTS

The two markets overlap but are not the same. 3-0 is over 2.5 but not BTTS, and 1-1 is BTTS but not over 2.5. Picking over 2.5 asks "will there be goals", while BTTS asks "will both teams score".
