Bankroll Management: Stake Sizes That Keep You in the Game

No tip wins every time. A bankroll plan decides how long you can keep playing through a losing run, which matters more than any single pick.

Even a good record contains long losing runs. Ten or more losses in a row happen to anyone who bets at around 50% win rates. Your bankroll plan decides whether such a run is an annoyance or the end of your betting.

1. Set a budget you can afford to lose

Your bankroll is money set aside for betting that you would not miss: not rent, bills or savings. Once it is gone, you stop. Never add money to chase losses.

2. Stake a small, fixed share

A common rule is 1% to 2% of the bankroll per bet. With a bankroll of 500, that is a stake of 5 to 10. Small stakes mean that a run of ten losses costs you 10% to 20% of the bankroll rather than all of it. Keep the stake the same for every tip so that one lucky win does not distort your results.

3. Do not chase

Raising stakes after a loss, or betting on matches you have no view on to win it back, is how most bankrolls disappear. A losing day is not a reason to change the plan.

4. Keep records

Write down every bet with its stake, price and result. Without records you cannot tell whether a source of tips or your own approach works, and memory favours the wins.

5. Know when to stop

Decide limits in advance: how much you can lose in a week and when you take a break. If betting stops being fun or you feel you must win back losses, take a break and see our responsible gambling page for where to get help.
